Endearing and helpful, Sprites are the living representation of Magic returned to the Island. Found roving all over, these innocent creatures provide unique effects.
— Fortnite

Sprites are a type of Item, Consumable, Gameplay Mechanic, and AI in Fortnite that were introduced in Chapter 6: Season 1.

Description and Behavior

Sprites are a type of gameplay mechanic which will roam around certain areas of the map, and can even be found in certain Containers. Sprites have a wide range of uses, from mobility, to unlocking loot to even aiding in battle.

Sprites serve as a equippable item that goes in its own separate slot. Players can manage them under the corresponding Sprites tab in the Lobby. Equipping a Sprite grants the player passive abilities in matches, and replaces the player's Back Bling. In addition to the dedicated Sprite, players can carry more sprites in their inventory during a match (1 per item slot, up to 5) but they do not grant any extra benefits, unless they are swapped out with the currently equipped Sprite.

Upon first logging in during Chapter 7: Season 3, the player is given a choice between a Fire, Water and Earth sprite as a starter. All Sprites start at Level 1 and their abilities can be upgraded by accomplishing objectives that grant points:

List of ways to earn Points in Chapter 7: Season 3
Name Requirements Points
Container Opened Open any container, including Chests and Ammo Boxes. 75 Sprite XP
Extracted Sprite Extract a Sprite via Extraction Site, Portable Extractor, or getting a Victory Royale. 100 Sprite XP (Base), increases depending on Sprite Rarity/Variant/Level
Enemy Downed Knock out opponents. 100 Sprite XP
Enemy Eliminated Eliminate opponents, Bosses, Characters, or NPCs. 200 Sprite XP
Elimination Assisted Assist in eliminating opponents, Bosses, Characters, or NPCs. 75 Sprite XP

Points go towards the currently equipped Sprite in their dedicated slot, and are shared across a squad if applicable. Levels are permanent and persist across matches--but leaving the match or being eliminated will reset any equipped sprite the player had to Level 1 and cause them to lose the Sprite, alongside any others they were carrying. The Sprites otherwise retain their levels when dropped, and other players can pick them up (and subsequently keep the levels for themselves if they can extract them).

Leveling up Sprite to maximum Level 5 unlocks their respective edit style for The Guardian skin and marks it as Mastered. There are milestone rewards for mastering multiple Sprites, which can be found under the Rewards tab in the Lobby Sprites screen.

Extraction

A key mechanic associated with Sprites is Extraction. If a Sprite is extracted, the player gains   Sprite Dust and the Sprite is unlocked permanently (if not already unlocked). The extracted Sprite keeps all of the levels they gained and can then be reequipped for future matches (with the exception of the Dream Sprite, who is forcefully extracted and reset to Level 1 when reaching Level 5).

There are three main methods used to extract a Sprite:

Sprite Dust

Sprite Dust is a currency associated with Sprites. It can be spent at Sprite Dust Service Stations located near Extraction Site drop zones to unlock perks and items. It also can be used to re-summon unlocked sprites from the Lobby if the player happens to lose a Sprite via elimination.

The primary method to gain Sprite Dust is to extract Sprites (starting at   500 , scales with rarity/level) but it can also be earned through Rewards milestones.

Water and Air Sprites

Water and Air Sprites will flee from the player if approached or attacked and can be picked up and carried, which enables the player to access shrines. When a carried Sprite is not the currently held item, it will take the place of the player's Back Bling. Depositing a Sprite into a Sprite Shrine will free the Sprite and grant the player Epic tier loot including a Boon corresponding to the element of the Sprite. When picked up, Water, Air, Dash and Superman Sprite Sprites are of Epic rarity. When dropped, Sprites will go back to being Wildlife.

Carried sprites could have been given to Bushranger in Nightshift Forest during Chapter 6: Season 1 to shift the time to day and grant the player a Solunar Key.

Dash and Superman Sprites

Earth Sprites

Earth Sprites can be found in various locations, unlike other sprites they will not flee from the player and cannot be picked up or carried, meaning they cannot be used to access Sprite Shrines or given to Bushranger. When a weapon is given to an Earth Sprite, it will eat the weapon, giving back a random Legendary weapon, most commonly a Shotgun. Earth Sprites have an Icon Earth Sprite (Map) - Icon - Fortnite on the map that shows where they are.

They react to the Island and its energies. And some of them have changed a little bit recently.
— Jade

Sprites are a species of magical spirits found in various realities. They are minor deities of Oninoshima following the return of Magic on the Island. Before the Shattering War, Sprites were worshiped to the now forgotten Sprite Shrines.

Personality

Sprites are described as innocent, endearing, helpful creatures. Water and Air Sprites can sometimes be fearful of strangers depending on the situation, while Earth Sprites remain much calmer. Moreover, while the first two are unable to speak, the latter are able to do so and are endowed with a great intelligence. Dash and Superman sprites loves to follow and interact with basically everyone that's not demons.

The only known people that can communicate and understand sprites are Bushranger.[3] and Jade.

Sprites are known to be afraid of the Dark Presence and his magic hungry Spires.

Appearance

Air Sprites: Soft, glowing, cloud-like creatures with a creamy white body. It has a swirl design on its chest denoting its element and expressive, large black eyes with sparkling highlights. Its rounded, marshmallow-like shape gives it a gentle and cute demeanor.

Water Sprites: Bubbly, water-inspired creatures with a translucent, gradient body transitioning from blue to teal. It features tiny bubbles rising from its head. Like the Air Sprite, it has adorable black eyes, a circular mark on its torso denoting its element, and a playful, cheerful appearance.

Earth Sprites: Robust, nature-themed entities resembling a humanoid tree trunk laid and surrounded by mossy rocks. It has glowing pink eyes, moss growing on its shoulders, and leafy branches sprouting from its head.

Dash Sprites: A glowing orange creature with soft edges, wearing a blue superhero mask with bright white eyes. It has small arms, Supernova emblem on its chest, and a blue cape flowing behind. Surrounded by a fiery red aura with sparkles, it radiates intense energy and heroic power.

Superman Sprites: A vibrant blue, chibi-style creature with big sparkling eyes and a small smile. Dressed in a red superman costume with a yellow belt and the iconic S emblem on its chest, it also wears a matching red cape. A swirling purple and pink aura gives it a charming yet powerful presence.

History

Unknown time ago

Prior to the Shattering War, When magic still existed on the island, Sprites were roaming the island, deified, with multiple Sprite Shrines to honor them. However, upon the end of the Shattering War, they disappeared along with magic, which was banished from the island.

Chapter 6: Season 1

Water, Earth and Air Sprites have re-emerged on the island, following the crash of the Zero Point Shard which reawakened magic on the Island. Jade, one of the Spirit Siblings, discovered that she had a special connection with the Sprites. When she was trapped in the Spirit Realm, Jade would be protected by the Sprites from the Demons.

Chapter 6: Season 2

Jade started to study her connection to Sprites, revealing she could understand them and what they feel and the same way they understand her and listen to her. She also reveals she feels the heartbeat of the Island itself in her chest.

Chapter 6: Season 3

Reacting to the changed Island energies following the Reality Wave from Predator Peak Portal and the invasion of the Demon Warriors, some Water and Air Sprites reacted and evolved respectively in Superman Sprites and Dash Sprites. The former obtaining Superman's powers, the latter obtaining the Zero Point's power. Jade sent The Looper investigate on them to see if they were alright.

Chapter 6: Season 4

The Swarm emerged from the Spirit Realm and attacked the Sprites on the Island, leading to their disappearance.

Chapter 7: Season 3

After the Dark Presence was defeated, one peculiar Water Sprite surveyed the damage and destruction that had been brought upon Oninoshima. Vowing to never let this happen to other realities, this Sprite somehow made its way to Reality: 266 and joined the New Seven, becoming The Guardian and the Champion of the Sprites. He received a new suit of armor from Doctor Slone.
